Ohio firefighter dies after fall through floor during blaze

Fire officials said crews arrived just after 1 a.m. after the report of a structure fire in the city of Hamilton. There was heavy smoke and crews entered the home after being told there could be occupants trapped inside. Fire officials said that turned out to be false.
J. Scott Scrimizzi, the city’s director of public safety, said “almost immediately upon entry,” a mayday call of “firefighter down!” went out. Fire Chief Steve Dawson said the firefighter fell through the floor into the basement.
Hamilton firefighters rescued the firefighter and performed CPR while taking him to Fort Hamilton Hospital, where he died, officials said.
Authorities didn’t immediately identify the firefighter in the city some 30 miles north of Cincinnati.
“This is a terrible day for the City of Hamilton,” Scrimizzi said in a statement. “Please keep the family and members of the Hamilton Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers.”
No other injuries were reported. The blaze remained under investigation.
